2010 Indonesia Day

LAWANG: Gateway to Indonesia.
A Uniquely San Francisco Tradition, Saturday on July 31st, 11 am to 4 pm at Union Square.
Indonesian American Community in Northern California and the Consulate General  in cooperation with the City and County of San Francisco, announced the 17th Annual Indonesian Day Celebration.  This exciting event will be held in San Francisco on Saturday, July 31st, 2010 from 11 am to 4 pm at Union Square.  For more than a decade, it continues to be the biggest Indonesian event in the United States.

This year’s theme will be called “LAWANG” (Javanese/Sanskrit word for “Gateway” or "Passageway" in English). Through this gateway, we are inviting people to peek into our life and culture here in the US as well back in Indonesia . Through this gateway too, there has been many cultural life exchanged between the US and Indonesia which people might not discovered yet.
Lawang in many ways also symbolizes our cultural evolution among our people who has been living here in Bay Area for decades, our American friends who has been admiring our cultures and the younger generation from the mix marriage between Indo-US parenthood.  Indonesian Day 2010 will feature performance of traditional and contemporary Indonesian dances and music from various Indonesian islands, most notably Bali, Java, Sulawesi, Sumatra and Kalimantan.  Well known singers, dancers and musicians from Indonesia will join local talents for a full day of fun and exciting performances.  Indonesian cuisine from local restaurants will be on hand to enhance the authenticity of the atmosphere.
According to Tony Lolong, the founder of Indonesian Day: “For one day in San Francisco, you can experience Indonesia with all your senses.  It’s like being in Indonesia without getting on a plane and spending thousands of dollars.  This is the best event to attend if you want to learn about Indonesia, its culture and its people”.  Since 1994, Indonesian Day has become a mainstay of multicultural events in San Francisco, enriching the community through the colorful sights, unique sounds, and exquisite tastes of this Pacific island nation.

“The continual popularity of this event serves as testimony to California’s appreciation and promotion of diversity”, wrote United States Senator Diana Feinstein.

“Every August, I look forward to this day of festivities with the promise of authentic Indonesian dance, music, song, martial arts and the opportunity to participate in a traditional Indonesian celebration”, stated former San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr. who attended past Indonesia Day celebrations.
